Matter in Hand

Some Christian names once favoured by royals
never cross socio-economic equator
remaining in the northern hemisphere
William, Edward, Charlotte, Victoria.
Others, the blue-collar salt-and-pepper
Wayne, Steve, Sharon, Raylene leave
the basement rental.

Some jet set between
Tania –
Tania local hairstylist at the hardscrabble Suburban salon
or
Tania charge nurse in a private surgical hospital
tall and aloof
height useful for down looking.
Came to see me –
discuss matters recall can’t
just two of us in empty quiet room
as she talked
something irritated
low…
continued to
she dealt to it vigorously
sound was distinctive and audible
hair rustling against underwear.
I looked at her
she returned my look,
without a blink.

Most of my life has been spent on the bench, occasionally called into the game by extravagance or attenuation. Waiting has turned a loner into a recorder - nondescript and inconsequential, more not noticed than overlooked - the non-vantage point of children not yet considered old enough to understand. Orphaned Islands (Un)poetry is a lifetime of picking anecdotes up and not throwing them away. Stories collected like odds and ends placed in a box in the basement, the garage, the garden shed - uncertain as to what their use might be but knowing that one day there might be one.
