Life Cycle

Graffiti?
Unauthorised – so it probably was
a mural on the side of the campus building
full-sized, predating Banksy by two decades –
a graduation stunt by a talented trio.
Before and after,
polenta coloured concrete block one afternoon …
vibrant hues of figure the next morning.
The authorities tolerant –
graduation is graduation
boys will be boys, and girls, girls –
a stay of execution, until after conferment.

Blank becomes vibrant
vibrant becomes blank
the curve bisects the asymptote,
a motor vehicle accident
and
death claims one of the artists.
A petition is presented
the mural remained … Still there 30 years later.

Most of my life has been spent on the bench, occasionally called into the game by extravagance or attenuation. Waiting has turned a loner into a recorder - nondescript and inconsequential, more not noticed than overlooked - the non-vantage point of children not yet considered old enough to understand. Orphaned Islands (Un)poetry is a lifetime of picking anecdotes up and not throwing them away. Stories collected like odds and ends placed in a box in the basement, the garage, the garden shed - uncertain as to what their use might be but knowing that one day there might be one.
