Arresting

Writing –
everyone thinks they can
travel stories the exemplar nadir
a cycling saga once read
London to New Zealand
via Iran, China, Vietnam, the Nullabor
I awake – tired and dehydrated
I pedal, hot countryside, headwinds, vindictive bureaucracy
I feel exhausted into my tent –
for 300 pages.

Poetry,
an industry with more producers than consumers
the webpage gave advice
and
a list of sympathetic publishers
small
art-house
looking for difference, for originality
submissions – twice annually
double-spaced – Arial or new Roman 12 pt
response time
3- 6 months dependent on volume – could be longer.

One publisher offers choice
   1) as above – and wait until contacted
or
    2) take a sample of work to nearest bookshop
remove all clothing
proceed to read out loud.

Most of my life has been spent on the bench, occasionally called into the game by extravagance or attenuation. Waiting has turned a loner into a recorder - nondescript and inconsequential, more not noticed than overlooked - the non-vantage point of children not yet considered old enough to understand. Orphaned Islands (Un)poetry is a lifetime of picking anecdotes up and not throwing them away. Stories collected like odds and ends placed in a box in the basement, the garage, the garden shed - uncertain as to what their use might be but knowing that one day there might be one.
