He was on the way out,
retiring to lucrative pension
been in the job a long time, been there, done that,
seen it all. And then some.

Was the boss for only three or four weeks
paid holiday? Absolutely not, too professional and vain for that.
I was newly promoted
told me to see him as a set of encyclopaedias
any problems, feel free to consult –
“we all make mistakes when new … often they can be avoided.”

Managing people : part shepherd, mostly sheepdog
guiding, growling, occasionally barking.
Black sheep: nothing worked
beginning to lead the flock astray

He listened
honesty felt compelled to addendum .. “I really don’t like …”
he asked if I would care to share my reasons

Most of my life has been spent on the bench, occasionally called into the game by extravagance or attenuation. Waiting has turned a loner into a recorder - nondescript and inconsequential, more not noticed than overlooked - the non-vantage point of children not yet considered old enough to understand. Orphaned Islands (Un)poetry is a lifetime of picking anecdotes up and not throwing them away. Stories collected like odds and ends placed in a box in the basement, the garage, the garden shed - uncertain as to what their use might be but knowing that one day there might be one.
