Two crimes drawing national attention
sentence passed almost concurrently
a doctor jailed for eight years for offences against patients
reduced to six by early admission of guilt
rape, indecent assault, emotional abuse
narcotic prescriptions in exchange for sex.

Three men and a woman hijack a security van
$900,000 stolen
no one threatened or injured
all monies recovered –
Justice dispenses nine years imprisonment.

Fact one.
Society values property more highly than people.

Generous approval is often given
to individuals with a pastime controlling of free time
an ornamental garden
a vintage car
a stamp collection
a period cello
a garage train set.

Fact two.
Those who would not trust someone alone
the garden
the vintage car
the stamp collection
the cello
the train set
will leave their children in the care of that same person.

Most of my life has been spent on the bench, occasionally called into the game by extravagance or attenuation. Waiting has turned a loner into a recorder - nondescript and inconsequential, more not noticed than overlooked - the non-vantage point of children not yet considered old enough to understand. Orphaned Islands (Un)poetry is a lifetime of picking anecdotes up and not throwing them away. Stories collected like odds and ends placed in a box in the basement, the garage, the garden shed - uncertain as to what their use might be but knowing that one day there might be one.
