Waiting

The phone call never came
ten days later a letter does.
Thank you ……
Please find enclosed …..
We wish you well ….

The equation of necessity
multiply hours by rate
subtract utilities
divide by mortgage
> outgoings
< ideal
= acceptable
not impressive, but it’s not about money anymore.
That part he doesn’t understand
a mistake – one of two.

I’m asked for a strategy
a system is needed
there is none at present
I am new myself he bristles. The second mistake.

The letter is late
the outcome already known.
Despite the fervent prayer for a miracle
the contents are predictable.
Thank you for attending
Curt and courteous
payback  is well mannered.

Most of my life has been spent on the bench, occasionally called into the game by extravagance or attenuation. Waiting has turned a loner into a recorder - nondescript and inconsequential, more not noticed than overlooked - the non-vantage point of children not yet considered old enough to understand. Orphaned Islands (Un)poetry is a lifetime of picking anecdotes up and not throwing them away. Stories collected like odds and ends placed in a box in the basement, the garage, the garden shed - uncertain as to what their use might be but knowing that one day there might be one.
