Out of Sight

Digestive biscuits and lemonade
medicine to 1960’s high-temperature children.
Coarse brown wheat flour and sugar
flat shaped and baked
born under the name wheaten
‘digestive’ an early fudging of science, by marketing.
Many years later
still available by birth title
and chocolate coated.

We were all in our 20’s
young people seeking adventure – and money
all remembered the cures and rewards of childhood.
Steve was a navy cook
surname Wheaton
inevitably christened Chocolate Wheaton
sound bitten to “Chocky Wheaton.”

History: Scott and Amundsen racing to the South Pole
heroic and indelible.
Chocky said he had never heard of them
or here, before
said when he returned to Ohio
his father asked, “son, where was that place you went
I looked all round the globe and couldn’t find it.”
He turned the globe upside down
“ there it is Dad.”

Most of my life has been spent on the bench, occasionally called into the game by extravagance or attenuation. Waiting has turned a loner into a recorder - nondescript and inconsequential, more not noticed than overlooked - the non-vantage point of children not yet considered old enough to understand. Orphaned Islands (Un)poetry is a lifetime of picking anecdotes up and not throwing them away. Stories collected like odds and ends placed in a box in the basement, the garage, the garden shed - uncertain as to what their use might be but knowing that one day there might be one.
