It doesn’t quite work
blunt humour and sharp asides
an immiscible blend of mateship and authority.
Rehearsed spontaneity
duets with artificial self deprecation
it brings to mind amateur dramatics.

For the next 12 months
he will be our guide, mentor, teacher
and for one or two …..executioner
the last difficult – but ruefully essential.

Our career path is demanding
high school teaching not for the uncommitted
but
we should be congratulated
for the foresight to choose this provider.

Most of my life has been spent on the bench, occasionally called into the game by extravagance or attenuation. Waiting has turned a loner into a recorder - nondescript and inconsequential, more not noticed than overlooked - the non-vantage point of children not yet considered old enough to understand.
