Speaking Out of Turn

Just before graduation
from learning the fundamentals of business
a guest lecture from a successful entrepreneur.
He speaks of his achievement
good business practices – yes
definitely
but also luck, slave hours and his wife’s support.
For conclusion
he talks of a topic not in the curriculum
of job loss
swift, unexpected and brutal – it happened to him.

The teaching staff shift awkwardly
today is about backslapping
proclamation of futures unlimited.
The rules have been broken
this will be his only appearance.

He attempted to maintain a normal life
colleagues avoided him
made excuses
friends always had urgent engagements – elsewhere.
Redundancy
people acted as if it were contagious
he began to believe it was.

Even now, a decade and many accolades later
he still feels the emptiness and humiliation of
writing letters
typing résumés
waiting in corridors
of hoped for phone calls.
Of unemployment.

With quiet authority and deep conviction he asks
if we have the opportunity to recruit staff
we consider those without jobs.
It scratched his soul he said
the scars have never quite gone away.

The Course Director rushes thanks.
Unfortunately there is no time for questions
but everyone is welcome to stay for drinks.

Formal

Pre-teen school requires cap and tie
at the age of 13
liberation
what has swept the world
arrives in the antipodes
hatless + no noose around neck.

Three years older and qualified
for the high school high point
ties loosened from daily requirement
still essential at the school ball.

At the upmarket department store
a bewildering array of neckware
styles and prices confuse
courage deserts – escape an urgent option.

A saleswoman high of breeding and low of voice
requests if she can be of assistance
intoxicated by perfume
bedazzled by cleavage
overborne by status I blurt my need.

A tie is required
something I had never previously purchased.
Young man she murmurs hypnotically
“there is a first time……. for everything.”

Bloodthirsty

A familiar ritual
four times per year
questions
personal : sexual history, sexual orientation, sexual habits
and “ ever injected drugs or shared a needle?”

The nurse professionally cheerful
runs a marker pen down the line of enquiries
checking each has been checked.
Anything not covered that should be disclosed? “No.”
This won’t hurt …. a small stab of the finger
blood spurts onto a slide – calibration.
“ Come through.”
A pressure cuff is fitted above the elbow. A needle inserted.

A large needle
with which tension has never not been
blood flows into rocking bag. Donation.
In this country no payment
only civic satisfaction
and coffee and chocolate afterwards.

By shuffle and deal of haematology
I am O- CMV –
exactly ideal for paediatrics
used in neonatal units for fragile newborns.
450 ml of platelets, plasma and oxygen
screened into six ready for combat packs
four times per annum times six
multiplied by 17 years… a lot of babies
life supports life and perhaps saves life.

Two women sit across the table
speaking lines of which they do not seem the authors.
We are a national organization one says
tone equating a distribution agency to the central bank
All the attributes in the job description are present
they would like to know something of the person.
Did I have children? “No.” Empathy closes ranks
intuition senses the evacuation of opportunity.

Two swap looks
a double rewinding of the past
memories of child rearing budget years.
I am thanked for attendance. Contact is promised.
The job is filled by a woman
perhaps her child has had my blood.
